  1. life maintenance

    November 2, 2008 by sassenach

    Last week was…interesting.

My car broke and $300 later, it’s fixed. I am officially broke, or something close to it.

Despite being close-to-broke, in my rabid fanaticism excited fandom, I pre-ordered Twilight tickets from Fandango. M and I (’cause you know I am dragging him to see it with me, oh yes) are going to the 7:30 PM show on opening day. The fangirls, they do not scare me, for I am one of them. In related news: this evening we were getting groceries at Kroger and I squealed because they had the mass market edition of the book, on sale for 40% off. I will let you guess as to whether I bought a copy. Lastly, while I was watching Ghost Hunters Live on Halloween night, one of the TV spots came on and I sort of screamed excitedly because Rob Pattinson in HD on big screen TV is SO MUCH BETTER than Rob Pattinson on tiny Youtube screen. Just saying. So, yes: Twilight = me squealing. It’s like my crack. I’m not sure what to do about this.

In knitting, I successfully blocked Clapotis the Fifth but I do not have photos to prove it. With the leftover handspun, I started and finished a cowl and when I tried it on, I felt like I was wearing a necklace. A very large yarn necklace. My gauge was way off. So I frogged it today and restarted it and hopefully it will fit this time. I’m just not having much luck with knitting lately.

Finally, the election is days away and I’m excited but simultaneously apprehensive. I want it to be over, but I’m sort of anxious over the potential outcome. I hope that all our efforts will pay off. M and I volunteered over the weekend and I hope it made some kind of impact, even if only the smallest. I hope.

(P.S. Holy crap, it’s November already!)

    Cabled Mug Cozy

    Cabled Mug Cozy @ Ravelry

I made this mug cozy as part of the package I put together for my partner in the Outlandish Swap on Ravelry. She has since received her goodies, so now I can post this pic. :) It’s a quick but satisfying knit–these are four-stitch cables, so they are easily knit without a cable needle. I used Knit Picks Swish Superwash in Squirrel Heather on size US 8 needles. I’d like to make another cozy for myself, or possibly as more future gifts. The cozy is secured at the top with crochet chain ties–basically the only crochet I know is the single chain and I think it turned out ok. I keep telling myself I need to learn crochet properly but every time I say that, I pick up another knitting pattern! Also, you can’t tell from my photo but the cozy has a bottom–basically the mug slips into it, and is tightened with the ties at the top. The pattern photo doesn’t really show this either, but it’s a nice, snug fit.

If you read the text of my handwriting in that photo, you can probably deduce what I wrote. I suppose now is a good time to confess that I’ve dipped my toes in the fan fiction pool, and it’s Twilight fanfic, as if that’s any surprise! (Is that right, is fanfic one word? fan fic? I don’t even know.) On the one hand, it’s wonderful to be writing again, but on the other hand…good grief, can I be any more assimilated into the Twilight universe? I’m pretty far gone, really. I probably require an intervention but I’ll go kicking and screaming. No really, it’s fun and I’m not taking it too seriously. There is some…interesting Twilight fanfic out there (TwiPr0n, more like, haha) but some of it is ok.

Elsewhere in the TwiWorld, last night M and I went to our local Hot Topic store for the Twilight soundtrack listening party. It lasted a little less than an hour, and our store played all the songs except for two. But they played Rob Pattinson’s “Never Think” and I LOVE it. It’s acoustic and Jeff Buckley-esque and made of wonderful. (There are several versions posted on YouTube and they all have excessive talking over them but I’ll deal with it until the CD arrives from Amazon because you know I totally pre-ordered it and everything.) I didn’t like the lullaby as much as I thought I would–it is accompanied by strings so that kind of threw me off. I’m looking forward to hearing it in the film, just the piano version. I had already heard most of the other songs before since they’re not new releases…I was basically there for the aforementioned songs. :)

This weekend I plan on blocking Clapotis the Fifth within an inch of its life to get as much length out of it as possible. It’s shorter than I intended because I was worried I would run out of yarn, and of course I ended up with plenty left over after I cast off. Figures. It will work out, I’m pretty sure. Also I need to block a Secret Project. I found some interlocking foam playmats at Target which I’ll use as blocking boards. I don’t block things often, so this should be interesting. oh and I chose my next sweater, A Cardigan for Arwen in Peace Fleece, so I think I’ll cast that on this weekend too. :)

  3. the not-so-good, and the good.

    October 18, 2008 by sassenach

Well, I’m up at 8:30 on a Saturday morning doing laundry, so I can’t squeeze much else out of my brain at the moment besides a list.

    The Not-So-Good:

    • My car stalled last night. In the rain. In an intersection. yeah, I freaked out. M was with me (thank all things holy) and responded very calmly to my cries of OH MY GOD WHAT DO I DO? AGGHHHH (The sad thing is, that’s not much of an exaggeration. At least I didn’t burst into tears.) Also, if your car ever stalls, put it in park, and then restart it because a car won’t start in gear. I did not know this! I know I’m not dumb, but some of these common sense things, I do not know. Anyway, my car is overdue for an oil change *and* a tune-up, sooo…yeah, I need to get those done apparently.
    • I frogged my Clapotis the Fifth because I was going to run out of yarn. I had knit about three feet of length, but it was too wide and there was no way I would have enough yarn to make it long enough. It wasn’t a big deal; I just slid it off the needles and pulled! Actually, I frogged it right back onto the ball winder, so it wasn’t a tangly mess. I already restarted it–I did fewer increase sections, then I’ll do a lot more straight rows sections to get the proper length. I can tell I’ll have enough yarn this time. So apparently, I haven’t quite got this pattern down pat after all!

    The Good:

    • M got a new job! :D He has been trying to get a government position for about a year now, and he finally received an acceptance email yesterday! No more driving to Newport News every day–that’s a 45-minute commute both ways, at least–some days when traffic is very heavy it can take up to an hour and a half to come home (it’s ridiculous)! His new commute will be about 20 minutes from our house, which is so much better. He is going to save quite a bit in gas money. Also, the salary is higher than he currently makes so that’s fantastic as well. I’m so happy for him!
    • Gas prices, they are going down. And they need to stay down!
    • In Twilight fandom, yesterday my copy of The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion arrived and it is made of awesome. I didn’t even really mind that most of the photos had already leaked online since they look so much better in the book (full-page glossies)! Don’t be fooled by the cover photo; Edward/Rob does not look grayish-green in all the pics. Note to Summit or whoever is doing all the Photoshopping on his hues/color cast: STOP IT, STOP IT NOW. This is Twilight, not Frankenstein. I swear he is bloody GREEN on the cover of this.
    • Also, Amazon’s shipping rocks because I placed my order two days before it arrived! And that was using Free Super Saver Shipping. yes, I like that indeed.
    • My Knit Picks Harmony Options Set arrived and it is also fantastic. I switched to these for my Clapotis, and the yarn slides very smoothly on the tips and cable join. I’m not crazy about the carrying case–I prefer the binder that the nickel Options Set came with. My carrying case had a light film of some kind of powdery substance on the outside (maybe to keep the plastic parts from sticking to each other? Not sure). That aside, I can tell I’m going to get plenty of use out of these and I might eventually like them more than my nickel needles. My nickel tips that get a lot of use (size 8, especially) have lost their shine completely. They’re not tarnished but they’re just dull. The Harmony tips won’t do that, plus they feel lighter to me than the nickels. Those are my first impressions.

Well, laundry calls–we’re going to my parents’ house this afternoon for lunch. My mom’s birthday was yesterday, so this is our little family get-together. :) Happy Saturday!

  4. diving too deep for coins

I would like to share this bit of musical perfection with you:

Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth

It’s going to be on the Twilight soundtrack (and presumably, in the film; I am hoping for the prom scene, that would be so sweet), so now I am obsessed with the song, naturally.

Here’s an acoustic version that nearly brought me to tears the other night at 4 AM:

    February Lady Sweater Progress

My February Lady Sweater is almost done! I’m on the first sleeve–knitting it on dpns which is kind of a pain, but I don’t have a 12″ circ so I’m just dealing with it. The fit is perfect and I’m so happy with the way it’s coming along!

Today I worked my last Sunday at the library (my second job). Today also begins my final week at the library. :( Again, I’m sad to be leaving but also looking forward to having time to relax, not work so much, and enjoy life more. After work, M and I went to the oceanfront because he wanted to get some seashells, sand dollars, and starfish to send to his niece in West Virginia. I brought my camera but didn’t take any photos because there were so many tourists and beachgoers around. I love going to the beach but I absolutely hate crowds, so we didn’t stay very long. I like going during the off-season, when it’s colder and the beach is basically deserted.

After the beach, we went to Borders and I got the 2009 Twilight calendar. And I’m probably going to go ahead and put it up, even though it is not 2009 yet, if for no other reason than to stare at this loveliness:

    Bella & Edward

After Borders, we stopped by Target for a few things but my feet started hurting due to my stupid flip-flops so I got all whiny and wanted to go home, haha.

Also today, I picked up a few little things which I can’t describe because they’re gifts for a certain someone‘s upcoming birthday…:)

  7. more decorating. also, depressing music.

    Craft Room Additions

Now that I no longer have homework to worry about, I’m trying to get more done around the house. I added a sewing table (and sewing machine!) to my craft room. Next weekend, I hope to actually get some sewing done since I don’t have to work that weekend. Also, I printed some photos that kc shared with me and framed them. I think they look good on that wall! There is so much color in this room, and I find it really warm and inspiring.

So, I’ve been emotional lately. I’m just weary…tired of everything, really. Personal stuff is going rather well–it’s just the work/school dilemma that causes me the most stress. Thankfully, though, there are some changes coming soon (I’ll be able to talk about them in more detail after tomorrow), changes that I think will make my life better in the long run.

Today I’ve basically holed up at home and knit on the February Lady Sweater that I started yesterday. Looks like I finally found my knitting mojo again, which is really nice since I basically hadn’t knit in several weeks.

I’ve also been listening to my personal Twilight playlist (yes I am still obsessed with Twilight overmuch). M just came in here a few minutes ago and said, “That sure is some SAD music you’re listening to.” I should post my playlist, but it really IS sad, haha.
