  1. a high-tech, digital world.

    October 30, 2006 by sassenach

The husband bought me a DVD recorder so that I can record tomorrow night’s Ghost Hunters live Halloween special! Six hours of TAPS goodness. oh yes. I actually considered taking Wednesday off work so that I could stay up and watch it, but…I’m a trooper, so I’ll settle for the recorded version. :)

Speaking of the DVD recorder, I haven’t even hooked it up to the TV yet, so I’m going to do that right after I post this! And I must test it, to make sure it works properly. I’ve never had a DVD recorder before, so hopefully it won’t be too difficult to figure out.

EDIT: I hooked up the DVD recorder all by myself and it works perfectly! I tested it, of course, at different recording speeds and what not…and I am good to go for tomorrow’s GH episode. :D

    In other news…

I spent a couple hours today at the library after work. I have got to get caught up in one of my lit classes. I got a lot of reading done today, in the quiet and virtual solitude of the library. It was better than trying to read in my house, among a ringing phone and the temptation of TV/knitting/Internet. Must discipline myself.

In light of recent…life craziness?…I’ve been medicating. Buying stuff. I’m waiting for my first Lisa Souza yarn order to arrive. I ordered a Ghost Hunters hoodie. I ordered a new Socks that Rock colorway. And last, I ordered a ring from Kathryn Riechert on Etsy.

Retail therapy, all online. This is either really, really bad, or the best I can do right now to get through everything.

  2. distractions.

    October 11, 2006 by sassenach

I’m still feeling somewhat melancholy lately. Part of that, I’m sure, is due to what I’m reading. I’m currently reading Night by Elie Wiesel for my Narrative Writing class. The book is excellent so far, but intensely disturbing–it’s about the Holocaust. I’m trying to finish it today. I wouldn’t have chosen to read it otherwise, especially with the way I’ve been feeling lately.

So, I medicate. TV, knitting, distractions.

Tonight is the season 3 premiere of Ghost Hunters! They’re having a marathon right now. Part 1 of the Project Runway season finale comes on tonight too, but GH comes before PR in my book. Besides, Bravo will replay PR all weekend long, I’m sure. I found out the other day that the girl I work with now watches GH too. woo!

The husband is going out of town this weekend for yet another SCA event. I plan to do homework and a LOT of knitting. I’m trying to bust my stash myself–using what I have. So now I have about 7 or 8 projects in queue, with yarn I already own. Sweet. :)

I have a lot more I’d like to say, but can’t find the proper words. Maybe later…

  3. late-night lunacy.

    October 1, 2006 by sassenach

I just spent the last five minutes scrutinizing a spreadsheet from one of my instructors with NO idea how she had the thing set up. We have ongoing peer assignments/commentary, and I could not, for the life of me, figure out who my partners were because all the names were lined up in columns and rows and it all looked like gobbledygook, as far as I was concerned. Darn spreadsheet! Then I stopped, looked at it again, and it made sense. Darn brain!

And I really should be more alert than this because I had a mocha earlier tonight. I should be wired! But no, I’m just confused. (When am I not confused, though? Still, I should be confused yet wired.)

I’m chugging away on my second Snakes on a Sock. I’m doing the heel flap now, taking a break so I can rest my fingers (by typing? hmm yeah).

I don’t think I ever posted this, but–Diana Gabaldon has a podcast now! For the Outlander series obsessed. :) Her voice is different–took some getting used to for me, plus she talks kind of fast. But I love hearing her talk about The Books, and hopefully the podcast will satiate me until the next Outlander book comes out…whenever that will be. A word of…caution?–the current episode, #5: Sex Scenes, is probably *not* the best episode to start with, lol. Particularly if you’ve never read the books at all. DG reads and explains excerpts from the latest book (her love scenes versus formula romance novels, etc.)…just a disclaimer there!

The husband just stole the TV from me, turning off my Ghost Hunters: Season 2, Part 2 in favor of watching C-SPAN. hmmm I’m not a fan of C-SPAN, but whatever floats his boat! I’m still in birthday mode for him–he turned 30 on Friday. And he is convinced he is some old man now. I badgered him in efforts of trying to figure out just what the heck to buy him for his birthday, but every time I asked, he just said, “I don’t know.” ?? Soooo I asked him if he wanted to go out for dinner, or what. He said, “Let’s go to The Olive Garden.” umm…we don’t have one here. The closest one is two hours away. So he asked for spaghetti and meatballs, which I made (from scratch! The meatballs, anyway. I didn’t mash my own tomatoes, or anything). We’re planning on going to Lubbock on the 9th (of October, eek! already?) since we’re both off for Columbus Day and doing a little shopping, or something. Just to get away from here.

So technically, I still need to buy him a birthday present, belatedly. I asked him yet again today what he wants, and he said Stargate SG-1 Season 9, which releases this Tuesday. PERFECT! He has every other season. That’s 8 boxed sets. That’s a lot of Stargate. He’s quite obsessed with the series, you see. But at least I know what to buy him, even if it’s late. It’s the thought that counts, and everything.

btw, the guy on Stargate who plays Daniel Jackson? Totally hot. Really. (When the husband was stationed in Germany, his friends thought he looked like Daniel Jackson [Michael Shanks]. I see some resemblance, but only when they’re both wearing glasses.)

I really think I’m descending into something reminiscent of adolescent boy craziness with all my fantasy boyfriends. Ewan McGregor (of course), Hugh Jackman (he would totally be my boyfriend if Ewan wasn’t first; and he is filming a movie with Ewan, btw. hehehe), Clay Aiken??, and Michael Shanks. I have these weird crushes, I know it’s insanely goofy but then again, so am I. I tend to be drawn to actors/singers/musicians, though. I wonder if Michael Shanks is a singer too?! (Good Lord, I am so rambling. It’s 1 AM here. And I’m highly caffeinated. I’m shutting up now.)

  4. reap what you sew.

    August 3, 2006 by sassenach

I totally lifted my post title from last night’s episode, btw. ok, everybody who watched Project Runway last night–what did you think?!

    * Spoilers ahead! You have been warned! *

  5. carry on.

    August 2, 2006 by sassenach

My Phantom of the Opera-like face has begun to calm down, at least a little bit. It looks like it’s healing. But then every time I think it’s clearing up, it decides to erupt again, so who knows. :P Thankfully, Proactiv has “processed and will ship in 24 hours.” So we’ll see how that goes.

Did I mention here that I applied for a new job? I don’t think I did. I think I just blogged about it on myspace. Well, it’s at the store where I work, but it’s an office job–technically, the job title is “Computer Operator,” which basically means a clerical position. Yes, another office job. This one includes payroll, which I did at my previous job, full time, eight hours a day. I almost went crazy. I’m hoping that I get this new position…the pay is roughly a dollar more than what I currently make per hour. Actually, it’s 97 cents, but close enough for me.

I’ve already applied for it. Before I did, though, I talked to the girl who has the job now–she’s moving in September. I basically had a little meeting with her and said, “So I’m thinking of applying for your job. Do you hate it?” lol! That’s really what I wanted to know, though…what I would be getting into. She told me about it and it really seems rather easy. So what the heck, I applied for it and I may or may not get it. Personally, I would lovelovelove to get out of the stinky warehouse job I have right now. That is, stinky as in it’s really a dirty job and I’m just over it. Plus a little more money always helps…oh, I just need to work in a bookstore or a yarn shop. Too bad neither would pay well, and money really is an issue right now. :(

Anyway, the husband is kind of bummed today because he was turned down for a loan at the bank. He has been trying to get a consolidation loan for a while so that we can pay off all our credit cards, but no one will help us out. Which really sucks, because we currently belong to a credit union and aren’t they supposed to be more helpful than banks? Yeah. Right. I was thinking maybe he was denied the loan because of my credit, which there is less of and my score is lower. But he applied for the loan in his name only, so they didn’t even look at my credit report, he said. It’s a bummer, but we’ll be okay. It’ll just take longer to pay off all our debt.

oh, and this is really random, but someone actually found my blog by googling “husband’s idea of beauty is not me.” :( How sad! I don’t know if that person is reading this, but if you are, your husband needs to wake up and love you the way you are! For real. Men are ridiculous. They always have been and always will be, and it is the rare one that isn’t ridiculous 99% of the time. If you find one of that rare, dying, nearly extinct breed, do let me know. He should be studied closely.

On to the brighter side! I just caught a repeat of Project Jay, and now they’re replaying this season’s Project Runway episodes. I am so obsessed with Project Runway, it’s crazy. I can watch the marathons over and over and still watch them again. It’s just so fun to watch the creative process, with all the different styles, designers, and personalities. And to think, I actually told the husband the other day that I didn’t want to buy season two on DVD! ??? What was I thinking? Now I want it. I miss Santino, haha.

btw…I’m 99% sure who is getting kicked off tonight, aka asked to leave the show. Google it if you can’t take the waiting–it’s all over the ‘net! :o

  6. self-control!

    July 24, 2006 by sassenach

I know the Bust My Stash giveaway just ended, but to my surprise, yarns such as the Kidsilk Haze and Lorna’s Laces are still with me! I smell Round 2 sometime in the near future. ;)

The husband and I both had/have today and tomorrow off from work. We spent today in Lubbock, where I visited a yarn shop (Shaggy Sheep) and get this: I did NOT buy anything. No yarn. No knitting books. Nothing! :o I’ve been there a few times before, and always manage to find something to take home…I remember the first time I went there, when I first really got into knitting, I spent something like $170 in one visit. :o It was crazy. So for me not to buy anything today, is really weird. Super self-control, I guess, though I did pet the Trendsetter Dune yarn three separate times, I think. I really like that yarn, but it’s too similar to the other mohair I’ve already got in my stash.

I did, however, buy two knitting books from Barnes & Noble: Knitting Rules! and Vogue Knitting Stitchionary, Volume 1. I am trying to branch out and try different stitch patterns, such as more cables and lace, and the Vogue book has tons of stitch patterns. I forgot to mention, a few weeks ago I bought Knitting on the Edge, which also has some fantastic motifs. I’m trying to advance my skills as a knitter, really I am! :)

It was a long drive to and from Lubbock today, but thankfully the husband always does the driving, leaving me with plenty of knitting time. So the first thing we did when we got on the road was listen to Tim Gunn’s latest Project Runway podcast! haha! I’ve totally gotten him into Project Runway. It started at the end of season one, you know when they do all the marathons at the end of the season? Then he watched all of season two with me (he wanted Daniel V to win), and now he is already hooked on season three. He actually listened to Tim’s entire podcast! :D Too funny.

So we just had my iPod going and I knitted during the whole ride to and from Lubbock. I started a new project, the Embossed Leaves socks from the Winter ’05 issue of Interweave Knits. And guess what?! I am knitting the lace portion from the chart! This is my first charted project, and yeah, it’s a fairly easy chart, but still! I’ve been intimidated by charts for so long…and now it actually makes sense to me. Major accomplishment, really! I’ll take a photo of my sock progress tomorrow, probably, and post it. I did two lace repeats during the whole four-hour trip; I think I really am a slow knitter. It seems like I should have gotten further than that, but oh well.

And right now I am trying reallyreallysuperduper hard not to buy some of Knit Picks’ new yarns, particularly Suri Dream Hand Dyed. The Falling Leaves colorway is calling me. I hear it. It is telling me to buy some. Must resist…must not add to the stash! Must continue having self-control!

  7. give me what i want

    June 5, 2006 by sassenach

…and I’ll go away. For some reason, networks (Sci Fi and USA, in particular) love showing Storm of the Century, one of many crazy Stephen King miniseries. I’ve seen this so many times, mainly for Tim Daly (from Wings). I like the story, except for the ending and the cheesy/fake New England accents (some of which come and go).

Maybe I should use that miniseries as the subject of this week’s Movie Journal entry. For my creative writing class, one of our ongoing assignments is to keep a journal of the movies that we watch (one per week) and review them from a writer’s perspective. How cool is that? Watching movies as homework! I love it.

I did a two-mile workout after work with my Leslie Sansone DVD. Yes, she’s perky in the fitness instructor cliche, but I must admit that I feel good. She might even be replacing Denise Austin as my favorite fitness instructor. I’m trying to decide if I should exercise every day, or every other day. I’m sure it couldn’t hurt to do it every day?

And just a little note: I posted a few permalinks in my sidebar (under del.icio.us) for my Hedera socks…I get a lot of Google referrers searching for “hedera,” “hedera sock,” or “hedera socks.” (And I’ll probably get a few more referrers now that I’ve mentioned Hedera again!)

Now it’s time to finish my laundry and do some homework.
