#2 of 52 – 52 Books in 52 Weeks
I needed a fun read, especially after kicking off 52 in 52 with The Stranger. Bridget Jones definitely delivered the laughs, though there were moments that seemed unnecessary and at times even pointless–like filler. It was as if the book could have been just as funny if it were several chapters shorter. During the final fourth or so of the book, I felt that Bridget became just too whiny and repetitive. Really, how many “Oh God oh no” days could she have?
Interestingly, I like the film adaptation more than the novel. The movie condensed the story nicely, as well as altered bits of the plot that improved it overall. (v.g.)
I think I’ll pass on the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason–I liked the movie, but not nearly as much as the BJD movie. I’ll be putting BJD up for swap since I don’t see myself reading it again. On the whole, though, it was a nice, lighthearted read.
(Also–since when is 130 lbs. overweight??)

I loved Bridget Jones’s Diary, but I read it when it was the first in the chick lit novel craze. I love the movie as well and watch it often! The book of The Edge of Reason is better than the movie, but not as good at BJD.
I think I read somewhere a while ago (a quick google search didn’t bring it up) that she weighs more in the UK version of the book than the US version. I agree, 130 is definitely not overweight.
hmm, so they lowered her weight in the US version? Figures! I think she weighs around 140 in the movie…? Still, I don’t think either of those are overweight–I passed those numbers long ago, lol!
Oh my, 140? I think I was 11 or 12 when I last saw those numbers on a scale.
Anywho…I was working in a bookstore when this book first came out, and though she was fiction, many readers went from reading BJD to David Sedaris to quench that need for 1st person narratives. Sedaris, however, writes about his real life, and Me Talk Pretty Someday is a good one.
Thanks for the recommendation–I’ll have to check him out!
