I had my annual medical exam a couple weeks ago, including the dreaded girly exam. Today their office called with my results.
Turns out that my pap smear came back as “abnormal.” My doctor is referring me to a gynecologist and I’ll get another exam done. The girl on the phone was very informative, but honestly, I don’t remember much of what she said. She used some medical terminology I wasn’t familiar with, and it was tough to process at the time since I was on my cell and driving. I had to pull over so I could write down my next appointment time, date, etc. She did stress that my results were negative for HPV, which is good, but that I need to go back due to the abnormalities.
She asked if I had any questions, and assured me that I’m “not dying” and “don’t have cancer,” but at the same time, I do need the follow-up exam done. I was ok on the phone with her, but after I hung up I totally lost it, started crying and worrying, thinking perhaps I AM dying and basically having a freakout.
I’m better now–especially after some googling and reading this, which is basically a summary of what the girl told me on the phone. Anyway, my appointment is on October 13, so hopefully it will go well and maybe my body’s just having some minor glitches or something.

You’ll be ok. A lot of my friends have had abnormal paps and they were ok. The most anyone had to have done was have a few cells taken out to be biopsied. I know it’s scary right now but you’ll be ok.
Sorry about your worries, I hope it’s nothing. That happened to me in my 20’s and they ended up doing nothing about it. Other than monitoring. Good thing is if it “is” something, it’s caught early and can be taken care of.
I hope you can be seen at the gyno soon and that it’s nothing too serious!
This isn’t going to calm any worries, but mine come back abnormal all the time. No kidding. ALL THE TIME. Scared the hell out of me the first time, I was 21 and my husband was on his first tour to Iraq, and the guy on the phone said “Well, cervical cancer can cause an abnormal smear.” I wanted to reach through the phone and throttle him.
Turns out, everything was perfectly fine, my girly bits just didn’t like the doctor that day and did whatever they could to make him have a headache.
You’ll be fine
hey- i had an abnormal pap a few years ago. mostly its not too much to worry about, esp if you don’t have hpv.
just follow up and take care of yourself!

Thanks everyone
Mine came back abnormal again this year. I have a follow up pap this month to make sure it’s all ok. But I’ve had it happen before and had the colposcopy and everything (and that SUCKED) but all in all, the doc was very reassuring. So let’s hope our follow ups go well!
I’ve have abnormal results before, and it was nothing. Try not to worry too much!
Hope you’re feeling better now. A little something to cheer you up over at my blog.
