ok, if you’re on Ravelry and frequent the forums, then you likely know about the MCY debacle. Last night it all culminated into MCY itself (themselves? herself?) joining Ravelry–allegedly–or at least someone claiming to be MCY. It got so wacked out that Casey even created a group just for it!
Here’s my dilemma: I used to buy yarn from MCY, back before they got all…uh…BAD and stopped shipping to people. I never received any rude emails from them, even when they once shorted my order. In fact, they corrected it rather quickly and I got more yardage than what I had ordered. And though I used to live in New Mexico, no, I am not Danielle.
I am, however, one of the…lucky?…customers who got what they paid for in a semi-reasonable amount of time. I used to own more of their yarn, including some sock yarn and more laceweight, but those were swapped and/or sold months ago. I feel badly for the people I swapped with, wondering if I should contact them after the fact and warn them about the yarn? I thought it was fine because it sat in my stash for so long and didn’t rub off on anything else, so maybe mine were from good batches…?
The thing is, I still have two balls of their silk in my stash. I did test one for color-fastness way back when I first received it, and while the dye bled, the colors have continued to look fine (no fading or felting or anything weird), so I think it’s safe. The other one hasn’t been washed. But moreover, I feel like the yarn is utterly tainted! Just knowing the source and all of the heartaches other knitters have had with MCY, I feel badly just owning the stuff.
What should I do? Knit with it anyway? Get rid of it? Throw it away? I don’t know, so in the meantime it’s just sitting in my stash.
And it just occurred to me that while I could have posted these concerns on Ravelry, some of the other people there are so out for blood that I’m a wee bit concerned they might think I’m Danielle too. ![]()

Welllll I think you should just keep it around for awhile. Use it later. If it is colorfast, there is no reason not to use it. Yarn is…yarn. I bought some MCY yarns awhile back and gave them out as contest prizes. Now I’m kind of wondering what to do. Though I assume they know about the “situation” by now. I just remember the pictures and the actual product being SO far off that I really wasn’t encouraged to buy any more.
i understand what you mean. i was gifted 4 skeins of the silk, and i’m even afraid to test the colorfastness of it! what to do, what to do? it just feel sdirty, but i HATE throwing out yarn. i don’t knwo what to do.
Wow, I’m impressed these people keep coming back! I thought Danielle was dying because of the most recent email to everyone they had email addresses for saying that she was! Personally, I was screwed by them (not in the yarn, which I also didn’t like) but in feedback on Etsy, but if you like the yarn, why not use it. I know from my experience, even without Ravelry I could barely give it away on Knitter’s Review, so you may as well use it.
yarn is yarn,, use it! that’s my opinion. who cares if other people hate it, if you have a ‘good batch’ then go you! if you’re nervous just make a ton of little stupid stuff like coasters or yarn people or something
I know you aren’t Danielle! I met you!
Seriously though … I don’t think it’s “bad” if you hold on to the yarn. You might find a perfect project for it later - and eventually, it will be just yarn (perhaps).
I know a lot of people are really upset about the whole MCY thing on Ravelry … the vengeance is kind of intense for me, so I’m trying to just watch from afar (like many people, I think). It’s such a trainwreck it’s hard not to look away.
yeah… it is kind of tainted, but not by you - I say, let it sit for awhile, then maybe make something out of it for someone else? that way you use it and someone else will enjoy it
it’s not your fault you swapped it, no one knew back then what a mess that would all turn into!
Eh, I’d knit with it. I’ve missed out on the whole thing, which I’m grateful for, since it sounds like a bad scene, but you paid for it, you have it, so knit it!
I got some of your destashed MCY before I knew about the issues, and so far so good. It’s actually making quite a lovely sock.
Hey, I just found out about this whole controversy. I say if the yarn seems to be OK and isn’t going to bleed too much, use it! I don’t think there’s any moral dilemma here–you bought it, paid good money for it. It’s just yarn–yarn has no morals, it just is, even if the person who sold it to you isn’t a good person! Just my opinion though.
And I’m not Danielle either!
I have to admit I was a little freaked out when I read some posts from an older woman who seemed to be new to Ravelry if not forums or the Internet in general, who was being accused of being Danielle. Though I guess if Danielle faked her own death, presumably she wouldn’t blink at coming onto a forum and pretending to be an Internet newbie who was satisfied with MCY. But I feel sorry for that poor woman if she wasn’t Danielle.
