these comments are really helpful for me too... we just found out that my boyfriend has high cholesterol too... and have been trying to figure out ways to reduce it. i mean, who even knew that sammich meat has that much in it! CRAZY! but he's been doing the oatmeal thing too... we are really at the point of just even looking to see if the things we eat have it in it or not. good luck!

and omg. i love chick-fil-a. it's my desert island food. yum!

So I'm telling you what my doctor told me. My cholesterol was around 260 back when I was 20 (uh, yeah), so I've been dealing with this for a few years now. I was told to eat oatmeal (like everyone else has said), and also to have fish once a week. I was told to exercise as well, of course. Do you know if anyone in your family has high cholesterol? It's in my family (and a symptom of another medical issue I have), and the only thing that worked for me was Vytorin. Hopefully you won't have to go the medicine route! Good luck!

blaaaah! my workboyfriend (who is actually very physically fit and quite buff) has really high cholesterol (esp. since he's only 29) and he's been eating oatmeal everyday and it really helped. brought down the bad, but more importantly, brought up the good.

Ugh, I'm sorry. I was going to suggest Oatmeal, too. I think garlic is very good for cholesterol, so maybe that's balance out the scampi for you?!

Opt for fat-free Frou Frou SB stuff. Have more whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Cut trans fats out. Here's a link with more info from the mayo clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-healthy-diet/NU00196

And have 30 minutes of activity a day (I'm still working on this one.). Take the stairs instead of the elevator and park farther from the mall. I hope the 'rents don't give you too much grief. Sigh.

Cheerios! I've never actually had my cholesterol checked, and I honestly don't know anyone first hand who has done it, but there used to be commercials claiming Cheerios help lower it. Maybe as a mid-morning snack or afternoon snack, just eaten dry like chips or popcorn... then you can have your oatmeal for breakfast. (Of course, I'm a weirdo who will eat cereal dry as a snack, so if that's not your cuppa tea just ignore me lol)

I love the American Heart Association. They have a pdf download that you might find interesting -- it lists things high in bad cholesterol, and suggests servings of things good for lowering cholesterol:
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3004838
(Something you can hand your mom if she really does want to um, help.)

Cheerios style cereal with low/non fat milk is a good oatmeal substitute.

It's not the coffee that is bad for you, it's the cream. Milk, whole milk is high in bad cholesterol.

I know all this lovely stuff cuz I'm a victim of HC as well. They get to check my levels on my next annual, the joys of no insurance means I don't "have" to go every three months to get blood drawn... even though maybe I should be... a topic for a post if there ever was one...

Thankfully, they didn't say anything about my BP being high, and I'm sure they would have if it were. So that's one good thing, I guess!
