Well damn.

My doctor’s office just called me at work to tell me that my cholesterol test results came back higher than normal. I need to change my diet and start getting exercise. I have to go to their office today to pick up another bloodwork form so I can be tested again in 3 months.

And now I’m thinking about all the food I eat every day that I need to cut back on and this is going to be like going on a yarn diet, only with real food. oh shrimp scampi at Red Lobster, how I will miss your buttery sauce…I know it’s for my health, and I can do it…it’s just going to take some time to adjust. sigh. Getting older kinda sucks, lol.

(And great, my doctor’s office called my parents’ house, so my mom called me twice at work interrogating me and I’m like, I can’t talk about this right now…can we talk about this later. Just one more thing that they can lecture me about. Fanfreakingtastic.)

Anyone have any lowering-your-cholesterol tips? Specific ones, other than don’t eat so much fried foods and go work out, you lazy bum?

  1. Oatmeal. Lots of oatmeal. Not the instant kind, either. The good old-fashioned kind that you cook. Also, my doctor told me once that usually there is one food that people don’t realize that they’re eating that raises cholesterol…such as eating cashews for a snack everyday, or a couple of twinkies everyday, or eating lunch meat in sandwiches everyday. Eliminating these foods to just once every couple of weeks can help lower cholesterol easily.

  2. Cool, thanks about the oatmeal! hmm…fast food and junk food are obvious, but I wonder if coffee is high in cholesterol? I have that every day (but then, I knew that wasn’t good anyway)…it’s not straight black coffee, it’s the foofoo Starbucks stuff. :D

  3. that cholesterol stuff sucks. i’m fortunate that mine is ok so far, but i need to lose this weight. my blood pressure is a little higher t han i’d like (granted, teenage boys tend to push those numbers, too, lol)

btw, email me, i got something for ya

  4. Thankfully, they didn’t say anything about my BP being high, and I’m sure they would have if it were. So that’s one good thing, I guess!

    You have been emailed. :)

  5. I love the American Heart Association. They have a pdf download that you might find interesting — it lists things high in bad cholesterol, and suggests servings of things good for lowering cholesterol:

(Something you can hand your mom if she really does want to um, help.)

Cheerios style cereal with low/non fat milk is a good oatmeal substitute.

It’s not the coffee that is bad for you, it’s the cream. Milk, whole milk is high in bad cholesterol.

I know all this lovely stuff cuz I’m a victim of HC as well. They get to check my levels on my next annual, the joys of no insurance means I don’t “have” to go every three months to get blood drawn… even though maybe I should be… a topic for a post if there ever was one…

  6. Cheerios! I’ve never actually had my cholesterol checked, and I honestly don’t know anyone first hand who has done it, but there used to be commercials claiming Cheerios help lower it. Maybe as a mid-morning snack or afternoon snack, just eaten dry like chips or popcorn… then you can have your oatmeal for breakfast. (Of course, I’m a weirdo who will eat cereal dry as a snack, so if that’s not your cuppa tea just ignore me lol)

  7. Opt for fat-free Frou Frou SB stuff. Have more whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Cut trans fats out. Here’s a link with more info from the mayo clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-healthy-diet/NU00196

And have 30 minutes of activity a day (I’m still working on this one.). Take the stairs instead of the elevator and park farther from the mall. I hope the ‘rents don’t give you too much grief. Sigh.

  8. Ugh, I’m sorry. I was going to suggest Oatmeal, too. I think garlic is very good for cholesterol, so maybe that’s balance out the scampi for you?!

  9. I’ve got to echo the oatmeal thing. It really worked for my mom. Good luck!

  10. blaaaah! my workboyfriend (who is actually very physically fit and quite buff) has really high cholesterol (esp. since he’s only 29) and he’s been eating oatmeal everyday and it really helped. brought down the bad, but more importantly, brought up the good.

  11. So I’m telling you what my doctor told me. My cholesterol was around 260 back when I was 20 (uh, yeah), so I’ve been dealing with this for a few years now. I was told to eat oatmeal (like everyone else has said), and also to have fish once a week. I was told to exercise as well, of course. Do you know if anyone in your family has high cholesterol? It’s in my family (and a symptom of another medical issue I have), and the only thing that worked for me was Vytorin. Hopefully you won’t have to go the medicine route! Good luck!

  12. these comments are really helpful for me too… we just found out that my boyfriend has high cholesterol too… and have been trying to figure out ways to reduce it. i mean, who even knew that sammich meat has that much in it! CRAZY! but he’s been doing the oatmeal thing too… we are really at the point of just even looking to see if the things we eat have it in it or not. good luck!

and omg. i love chick-fil-a. it’s my desert island food. yum!
