As some backstory/clarification to my previous post, and because I am so INCENSED by the LUDICROUS nature of my MacBook troubles, here are the gory details thus far in my MacBook drama. (I just posted this at the L&V board, then figured heck, might as well put it here, too.)

As some background, I am a total Mac person. I made the switch years ago and haven’t looked back since! The only time I use PCs is at work, because I don’t have a choice. But now, I am SOOOO sad/pissed/disappointed. And I know that the badmouthing about Apple I’m about to do is justified:

I’ve only had my MacBook for one MONTH, and now the battery is having issues. Apparently one day I didn’t notice that it needed to be charged, so the battery drained completely. No big deal, it’s rechargeable! But when I went to plug it into the power adapter, it started randomly shutting down and then when I turned it back on, the thing told me I had “No batteries installed.” eh???

I called AppleCare, the tech support peeps, and they very nicely tried to help me troubleshoot, which didn’t work. They then overnighted me a new battery. When I got it the next day, I installed it. Success!…so I thought. The new battery worked for about an hour, then crapped out, too. Same problems. :(

I called AppleCare AGAIN, and the support person I talked to thinks it’s a hardware issue. So I’m taking it to my local Apple store tomorrow to have them look at it. I have a feeling they’re going to send it out for repair, so if I’m absent from here/the Net for about a week or so, that’s why. :(

Bad Apple. I’m only able to use it when it’s connected to the power adapter (it won’t even TURN ON unless it’s plugged in), and even then it’s telling me I have no battery. ugh! Sadly, too, I’ve done some googling and this is apparently not only a very common issue with MacBooks/MacBook Pros, but is a KNOWN issue with Apple and they’ve been scrambling to send out new batteries/repair MacBooks on the down-low. grrrrrrrrr.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that they can either fix it on the spot for me tomorrow (doubtful), or that they can repair it offsite and that will take care of all the problems. If so, Apple can get back in my good graces…if not…we’ll see!

So yeah, if I’m not blogging or posting on the L&V board/Ravelry/Flickr/etc. much or at all this coming week, that’s why. MacBook to the doctor, possibly. I still have Net access at work, of course, but I don’t think I’ll be able to hop on much except my Gmail. So cross your fingers for me, maybe the folks at the store tomorrow will magically fix my stinkin’ MacBook! (’cause right now, I’m thinking of it as “that stupid piece of crap” and once it’s fixed it will go back to being “you pretty computer, yes you are!”) But in the meantime…

Technology is great when it WORKS, eh?

  1. Man, that sucks! I really hope they can fix it for you there today and that Apple will get back into your good graces!

  2. Thanks, I hope so too! I love Macs so much, I would really hate for us to break up. ;)

  3. Sorry to hear about your computer woes. Not having my comp wold drive me loony. I do hope they can fix it for you asap. :)

  4. I’ve only ever owned three computers in my lifetime, all macs. I felt I had to preface my next statement. Maybe even mention I’ve lived with computer programers/engineers/geeks for over 10 years now…

Mac is super good at taking care of you that first year. Worse comes to worst? They will replace the entire laptop. The nicest part of this OS is that all they have to do is connect the two lappies with firewire chord and have them “mind meld” and you won’t even have to shift one file yourself. (Ask if they do this at your Genius bar–they do it at the Seattle one.) The Apple guys are really rad here in Seattle. They replaced my friend’s ipod TWICE, and he’d gotten it as a gift, no receipt, nothing.

I wish you lots of luck. Not all of the lappies are duds, just the one you happened to have. If bad things happen in groups, I think you’re due for something good about now, right? :!:

  5. When I saw that the title of your post ended with “pt. 1″ I knew it was bad news! If it is any consolation, last week my power adapter MELTED. If I hadn’t been using the computer when it happened, it surely would have caused a fire.

I think they should give us both free iphones for our trouble :)

i am hanging in there with Mac, because I bet it would just be _worse_ with someone else.

  6. Good luck… I’m sure they will treat you well :) I have faith in the Mac peeps. *crosses fingers*

  7. There’s three types of computer users. There’s Mac users, prebuilt PC users, and custom PC users. The only ones who truly win are the custom PC users.

Mac’s are flashy. They look nice. They have an easy to use interface, but the fact is, the interior is just made up of crap. Sorry, but it’s true. When the iPhone came out, it looked cool, it seemed cool, but the network is shit, the security is poor (one has already been hacked into), and I’ve already been hearing about hardware problems. This is typical Mac.

Prebuilt PC’s are no better. They usually have a lot of the same problems.

But custom PC’s…. when you build your own computer, you can build it the way you want. You can research the hardware, find things that have minimal to no problems. Find things that work well together. You can go cheap on a video card, but put more money into your processor if you want. Yeah, I’m all for the build your own computer. I have a laptop now because it was definitely a better choice for college. After I graduate though, I’m so building my own desktop.

  8. I’m sorry! I went through HELL with my brand new Vaio last fall… I hope that you can get this all sorted, and soon!

  9. my brother in law’s macbook had the same problem. they swapped it out for him and he’s great now!

  10. They distribute macbooks to us at the beginning of each school year and the random shutting off problem is very common among students.

I prefer the Mac OS over Windows. I use Windows because it’s what I get fixed for free.

  11. Good luck with your MacBook!
