on yarn snobbery, part ii: in defense of lion brand.

Cashmere Arm Cosy This is the project that caused me to stand corrected on the quality of Lion Brand yarns, and on yarn snobbery in general. This is my first Cashmere Arm Cosy, knit in Lion Cashmere blend.

I really, really like this yarn. It’s merino and cashmere, and while I could have bought a similar product from Knit Picks, I didn’t for a couple reasons. A) this was at my local Hancock Fabrics, thus I was able to fondle it in person; B) said Hancock is going out of business, and I was able to buy this yarn for 30% off; and C) Knit Picks doesn’t carry the yarn I needed (worsted weight) in a camel color! I think they have some Wool of the Andes in camel (or caramel or something or other), but I specifically wanted camel since it matches my coat and I am THAT picky. ;)

This pattern was really fun to knit and fast since it’s a worsted weight. And I LOVE the cables. The pattern uses four different cable motifs, two of which I’d never used before, so I learned something new while knitting this. :)

This is definitely one of Lion Brand’s nicest and most decent patterns. I know they have some wacky stuff out there (most of which incorporate Fun Fur), but I really think that the quality of their patterns and yarns is improving.

saved!

Just finished watching Saved!. I liked it A LOT, probably more than I would have if I hadn’t gone to a pseudo-American Eagle Christian School myself, haha. Don’t get me wrong, I know that all Christians are not crazy people but I do have firsthand knowledge that a lot of them are, in fact, hypocrites. Just like any other segment of the population, there are real people, and there are fake people. Anyway, I found the movie very entertaining. :)

So keep the movie recommendations coming because that’s two-for-two so far on the comedies! Say no to depressing movies! (At least until my divorce is finalized.)

cheering up.

Some yays for today :)

- a package from kc, filled with cheered-me-up goodies!

- watching Love Actually again; I should just buy this on DVD. Really great feel-good movie (that saved me from the SherryBaby hangover, ugh). Tomorrow I’m watching Saved!.

- getting some knitting done on my Roza’s Sock from the latest Interweave Knits (I need to post a photo, hm?)

Tomorrow is another Running Errands day. I’ve got a third appointment with my attorney (finalizing the paperwork), yet one more trip to the post office, grocery run, etc. I really need to get a move on and finish packing! While I’ve made a significant dent in my stuff, I still need to go through the rest and sort it all into keeping/giving away piles…oy!

movies and such.

I guess the Academy Awards are tonight…? I used to watch the show every year, but in recent years I’ve just shrugged them off and read the recaps the following morning. Besides, I’ve hardly seen any (if any!) of the films nominated this year.

Speaking of movies, I watched SherryBaby. YUCK. I did not like this movie at all. Maggie Gyllenhaal was good, though I could have done without seeing her topless that many times, ahem. And the story was just sad and depressing and I really, really need to stop renting depressing movies! lol So if you have any suggestions for nice, funny, HAPPY films, please share.

is this winter?

It’s 72F outside. And really, really windy. We’re actually under a “wind advisory” until Saturday night. Gusts could reach up to 50 mph!

As such, I woke up this morning and my allergies were kickin’…sniffly, eyes watering, and a headache that seems to have subsided. I ran some errands and I think now I’ll sit and knit and marinate in my allergy-ness.

my day, in list form.

- Appointment with my divorce attorney, who seems to think of me as his adoptive granddaughter. (He is 75 years old. Told me so.)

- Hitchhiking homeless man on the side of the highway who had a REALLY cute doggie with him. (He asked for a ride when I stopped, but I told him I couldn’t give him a ride and gave him some cash instead. I drove by again about an hour later and it looked like he got some food, at least. He was eating and giving the dog some food. awww.) And I got to pet the doggie! :)

- Second trip to the post office this week. Yesterday was clothing (ching ching: $19 in shipping) and today was books (ching ching: $13, thank you Media Mail for saving me).

- Coffee.

- An actual civil and necessary phone call to the ex/soon-to-be-ex, whoever he is, regarding some final paperwork and financial matters.

- Pawn shop. Apparently when you go to the pawn shop and want to sell something, you say “sell” and not “pawn.” Pawn means you eventually want it back. I did not know this, though the dude at the store informed me that’s what it means, and called me “doll” before I left. okay.

- Good mail day!

- New Lime & Violet episode, which had me laughing in the car and was a MUCH-needed relief to my whopper of an emotional roller coaster today. Thank God for small mercies.
