Sassenach Yarns I have a dilemma! I don’t know what to do about my poor Etsy shop. I haven’t updated it since February, and sadly, don’t have the time to because of work and school. The small amount of yarn dyeing I had been doing was rather time-consuming. I’m thinking it might be a good idea to close up indefinitely, since who knows when I will have the chance to update regularly.

The three remaining yarns for sale will continue to be listed on Etsy until July 24, when the listings expire. At that point, I can relist them; if not, I will probably gift the yarn or swap them.

I’m so sad because I really did enjoy dyeing the yarn and selling it. :( But, what can you do. I have to work, and I have to finish my degree because that’s my goal. I’m even considering (gulp!) going on and getting a Master’s degree in English once my B.A. is done. That’s a scary thought, though. I will most likely have to take out massive student loans in order to achieve that, but to be honest, I think I might be ok with that in the long run. But is that what I really want? Do I really want to teach English Lit at the college level one day? Maybe. I don’t know! haha, I’m such a wreck.

I need guidance. :???:

  1. Guidance… that is something I suck at, but if we are talking confusion I am right there with you. No wonder you are dreaming about houses if this is what is on your mind. What will give you energy right now?

  2. Even though you HAVE to work & school sounds like it’s a necessity, you need to narrow down what your favorite free-time activities are. When you have free time, what do you enjoy doing? I was in a similar predicament YEARS ago & someone recommended that I write down my top 10 favorite things to do & then put them in order of importance. If dyeing yarn & selling it on Etsy is in the top 3, then you’ll know to keep doing it, if not you can let it go now & always go back to it later. There’s a time & season for everything.

  3. The great thing about selling yarn is that you don’t HAVE to do it right now. It’s nice to do as a creative outlet, but if you have more important things to do right now, you can put it off until there is more time. I’ve been slacking on the yarn dyeing also, so my etsy shop has been very sadly empty. I think I may keep it for a while just in case I do dye some stuff, but it’s not really on the top of my list right now.

  4. Keep the shop open - it is free to just have it as an option in case you want to sell the yarn in the future. Those of us that have you marked as a favorite seller will see when you have added items to the shop easily then if you come back to it in the future. You have made a name for yourself already, so there is no point in losing that hard work that you have already done. :)

  5. I agree with everyone! You shouldn’t feel obligated to put up new yarn, but you shouldn’t feel obligated to close your store either. Maybe sometime, you will get some free-time and dye up a storm! I’d hate for your customers to miss out :)
I think you probably do need to sit down and really think about what it would mean to get your Master’s, and how and why you would do it. (ok, that sounds like I think you haven’t really thought about it, and that’s *not* what I mean!) Pro/Con lists are my best friend! It’s not like signing your life away (even if it may feel like it) and if you *did* decide to do it and it didn’t work out, you don’t have to keep going.

Life will keep going on and the sun will rise and set whether or not you can decide on what schooling you want :) Yes, school is important, but so are other things. Like yarn, and … um… other things? :P Hang in there, and you will be okay, I promise! *hugs*

  6. Emma: I’m glad I’m not the only one who is confused. :)
Kristie: that is great advice! Unfortunately, the Etsy thing just isn’t in my top three right now…but that might change in the future.

reesie: I feel the same way. I guess our Etsy shops will have to wait!

Christine: good point! I didn’t think about people already being familiar with me…maybe if I do come back later, they’ll still be around, too!

kc: a pro/con list is brilliant! I will have to make one in regard to the whole Master’s thing. Because to be honest, I’m not sure if I want to get one because that’s what I want, or…just to do it! It’s confusing for sure!

Thanks everyone for the comments/advice/etc, I appreciate it muchly! :)
