getting things together.

Green Gable & Books Possibly boring school details follow…feel free to skip to the bottom, where the knitting content is. :D

In efforts not to feel stressed about my classes during the summer, and to become more organized on a daily basis, I’ve sort of psyched myself up about things. School especially; I’m looking at my creative writing class with enthusiasm and as an opportunity to refine my writing skills.

I’ve always scribbled stories and poetry, ever since I was a child. The farthest back I can remember is age six. I used to write short stories and type them up on our typewriter. I am pretty sure I still have those stories…somewhere. I remember distinctly that one was called “The Circus.” My parents never took my sisters and I to the circus. Ever! Hence, I had to make up a story about it. :D

Anyhow, one of my first assignments for creative writing is writing poetry. I think that will be the easiest part of the class for me. Next is short stories; I’ve written those, but I’m a bit nervous about my professor analyzing them. I’ll also have to write some “creative nonfiction” and a short screenplay! That will be a first for me. Everything about this class is kind of nerve-wracking, but really exciting at the same time. :)

My other class is an elective, Intro to Women’s Studies, and I’m not too worried about it. I only have a few papers and projects…I think it will be a cinch.

If I weren’t an English major, I think I would be either a Psychology major or a Women’s Studies major. Though I’m sure the husband would just DIE if I majored in Women’s Studies. I can hear him now: “You want to be a professional feminist?!?!” hahaha. (He is the stereotypical Southern good ol’ Republican boy. How did we ever end up together.)

So, back to getting organized. Before classes started today, I printed out all my syllabi, etcetera, and organized all the paperwork in my homework binder. I made up labels and tabs and I am determined to take a better approach to my homework than I did last semester! (Though I did well last time, I still had a bad habit of procrastinating.) So today, the first day of classes, I did some reading and one of my assignments that isn’t due till the weekend. I’ve also planned my homework for tomorrow. Hopefully I can keep this steady pace going! :)

As for knitting, I have begun Green Gable! (In blue, btw.) I thought I didn’t have any stash yarn to use…I even tried subbing some yarns, but I could not get the correct gauge. I actually swatched a bit, something I never do! I thought I was going to have to buy new yarn…then I remembered that I have had this Rowan Calmer yarn (four balls) in my stash for ages, seriously. I’ve never found the right project to use it on. Until now! I got gauge perfectly and cast on for GG. I’m about to start the fourth lace repeat. It’s really easy so far; the directions are clear and easy to follow. I just hope it fits!

Today is a pretty good day…I think I will go exercise my writing skills some more! :)

what to do.

Sassenach Yarns I have a dilemma! I don’t know what to do about my poor Etsy shop. I haven’t updated it since February, and sadly, don’t have the time to because of work and school. The small amount of yarn dyeing I had been doing was rather time-consuming. I’m thinking it might be a good idea to close up indefinitely, since who knows when I will have the chance to update regularly.

The three remaining yarns for sale will continue to be listed on Etsy until July 24, when the listings expire. At that point, I can relist them; if not, I will probably gift the yarn or swap them.

I’m so sad because I really did enjoy dyeing the yarn and selling it. :( But, what can you do. I have to work, and I have to finish my degree because that’s my goal. I’m even considering (gulp!) going on and getting a Master’s degree in English once my B.A. is done. That’s a scary thought, though. I will most likely have to take out massive student loans in order to achieve that, but to be honest, I think I might be ok with that in the long run. But is that what I really want? Do I really want to teach English Lit at the college level one day? Maybe. I don’t know! haha, I’m such a wreck.

I need guidance. :???:

next!

Hedera Hanging Out I know my fingernails are way too long at the moment because all night I’ve been trying to type and I keep hitting that darn caps lock key, so everything LOOKS LIKE THIS, then I have to backspace it all and fix it…arg!

As you can see, my Hedera socks are finito! woohoo! Now, for my next trick…what is my next trick [project]? I would like to make another pair of socks, but which ones? I also thought about purchasing the pattern for Green Gable, but I don’t have any yarn in my stash at the moment that would work as a substitute. :(

Although! I’m in the process of selling back my textbooks from the spring semester to textbooksnow.com, and I’m going to be getting back $88.50! :D Last semester, I think I only got back $38. Major improvement. Maybe I will treat myself to project yarn with that money (as opposed to random, impulse, will-sit-in-my-stash-for-eons yarn buying).

Or maybe I should set aside the cash for something else…it’s not as if I need any more yarn right now!

Or do I? ;)

early bird?

I woke up this morning, a Saturday morning, at 6:30! What the heck? So much for sleeping in on my last weekend before the summer session at school begins. I couldn’t fall back asleep, so…I pulled out my Leslie Sansone DVD and worked out for about 20 minutes. The Denise Austin workout I did two days ago pretty much kicked my butt (as I am so out of shape), so she’ll have to wait until Monday till I join her again. I think Leslie will probably grow on me over time; she’s not as bad as I remember.

(All this return to working out is part of my resolution to get back in shape…see the post below, “get in shape, girl.”)

I had another weird dream a few nights ago. I dreamed that I was in a haunted/possessed house, but I wasn’t really a character in the dream, I was just an observer. These creepy girls came in the room and left, and there was blood in the house. And then (and I’m not sure where in my subconscious he came from), Michael Vartan (the guy from Alias!) was in the dream, being harrassed by the ghosts/demons. That was pretty much it. Definitely weird. (Especially considering that I don’t even like him and I don’t watch Alias.)

I’m going to try to finish my Hedera socks today, so hopefully pictures are coming soon. :) EDIT: Hedera socks are done! Look, look!

boredom.

I just came home from work, this weekend is a three-day one for Memorial Day…and I am so bored! I need something to do!

This post is really meaningless.

Edit: Is it just me, or is my site not pinging Bloglines when I update?

get in shape, girl.

When I was young, one of the many hand-me-downs I inherited from my sisters was an exercise set called Get in Shape, Girl! (This link is a confirmation that the thing actually did exist, though there’s no photo to go along with it.) I just remember a goofy long ribbon on a stick that was supposed to be an exercise tool. And there was also a cheesy cassette that came with the set, though I can’t remember what was on the tape. I also remember playing with the ribbon rather than using it for actual aerobic exercise.

Today I attempted to get crackin’ on one of my New Year’s Resolutions (never mind that the year is nearly half over): Start working out again. Once upon a time (before I moved to The Wasteland), I used to walk two miles every other day and work out to my beloved Denise Austin Totally Firm (snicker!) workout tape on alternate days. I even started eating healthier!

But in recent…years, now?…I’ve just become lazy, no excuses about it.

aced!

I am so happy! I found out about a week ago that I got an A in my Technical Editing class, and I just found out that I got an A in my [insert stuffy air here] 17th and 18th Century British Literature [/stuffy air] class! It was a tough one because I didn’t enjoy the literature of that period nearly as much as the modern period, which is what I have studied primarily. So the fact that I did well is very pleasing to me. (But please don’t ask me about John Dryden or Jonathan Swift, for I have, in essence, brain dumped anything I did learn about ye olde tyme in literature, and thus cannot expound on them for you, haha!)

And actually, for the past week or so, I was worried that my exam had gotten lost in the mail, or something. (I take online classes but take my finals locally, then they are mailed by my testing center to my professors.) So yesterday, I emailed my prof to ask if she had received my exam yet, and just didn’t have time to grade it yet. This morning, she replied:

You must be psychic. Your exam arrived late yesterday afternoon.

Then she told me my grade for the exam and for the class overall. hurray!

It’s not official until it posts on my student record, so I’m going to keep checking to make sure that it posts ok. She said that she had trouble with another student’s final grade not showing up, so I am definitely going to keep watching that.

Other than that, though, thus ends another successful semester (in the seemingly never-ending cycle of college that rules much of my life).
